Crohn’s is a disease of the developed world and principally of the U.S. and Europe. In rural areas and in southern climate it is less frequent. People know nothing about the Crohn’s disease unless they have it. But once you have it knowing as much as possible about it will be important for you and your healthcare program. The article provides an overview on the Crohn’s ailment and some information concerning Crohn’s disease surgery.
The disease is called after Dr. Burrill B. Crohn who with two of his colleagues first described it. Often it takes some time till two diseases (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) are diagnosed as they have a number of similar symptoms, affect the same structures, and receive the same abnormal response of the organism’s immune system. Still about 10 percent of the cases can not be pinpointed which of the two they belong to.
Crohn’s disease is an ongoing inflammation of gastrointestinal (GI) or digestive tract. It can affect any of the GI area (from the mouth up to the anus) – and this is mainly what makes it different from the ulcerative colitis. Usually the disease affects the colon and or the small intestine. In most cases it leads to Crohn’s disease surgery at some stage of the treatment. Although much research has been done there is no definite solution to what causes the Crohn’s disease.
The studies show that the following factors may provoke this inflammatory disease: inheritance, the immune system, virus, bacterium, and antigens (foreign substances) in the environment. The illness can be transmitted by members of the family as well. The medical therapy mainly aims to improve the immune-system regulation.
The symptoms of Crohn’s disease are: persistent diarrhea, pains, sometimes rectal bleeding, loss of appetite and weight, fatigue. However the symptoms vary from case to case. Usually up to 60-70 percent of Crohn’s disease patients require surgery. In order to avoid the Crohn’s disease surgery the patients should follow the basic instructions that apply and take all necessary preventive measures. Also if affected you should use bland and soft food as the spicy and fried food may cause further inflammation of the organ.
Crohn’s disease surgery is required when medications already become ineffective at some stage, if fissure or fistula operation is needed, or any obstruction or complication appears. If a bowel segment is removed the healthy ends of the bowel are joined. The surgery first of all aims to conserve the bowel. But an ileostomy may be required. In this case an ostomy bag will be worn permanently to remove intestinal waste out of the body. The bag should be emptied regularly during the day.
People are much concerned about this procedure as they fear it will let our odor and people around will know about their situation. In reality it is not so. The operated patient will continue to wear his or her usual clothes and only minor adjustments will be needed after the Crohn’s disease surgery.
Fundamental condition preventing Crohn’s disease and other types of colitis is regular and healthy nutrition, personal hygiene, tidiness of the place where the person lives and eats and of course positive disposition towards life.
